August 4, 2025 | Mercy Hands : Sustainable Educational Leadership Shaping Iraq’s Future

Amid the significant challenges facing Iraq’s education sector, Mercy Hands for Humanitarian Aid continues to strengthen its role as a strategic and effective partner advancing comprehensive and sustainable education reform. At the 9th quarterly meeting of the Iraq Civil Society Education Forum (ICSEF) held in Erbil, organized by UNESCO Iraq in partnership with People in Need and RRD Organization, Mercy Hands reaffirmed its leadership in driving collective efforts focused on building

a resilient education system that reflects the realities and needs of Iraqi communities.

The meeting brought together over 30 civil society organizations from across Iraq’s provinces, fostering open and productive dialogue on enhancing coordination among stakeholders and achieving the goals outlined in Iraq’s National Education Strategy (INES 2022–2031), while considering the social and economic diversity of each region.

Through its active participation, Mercy Hands contributed expert insights based on its direct experience working in conflict-affected and infrastructure-challenged communities. The organization emphasized the importance of flexible educational programs that strengthen local civil society capacities and target the most vulnerable groups to ensure equitable access to quality education.

The forum also covered important updates on civil society organizations’ reporting mechanisms, alongside the launch of a professional registration platform by Save the Children designed to build an organized database of education stakeholders, enhancing coordination and enabling evidence-based planning.

Mercy Hands’ engagement in this event is far from symbolic; it represents a strategic step in the journey to build an education system centered on learners, valuing local and international partnerships alike. We firmly believe that education is the cornerstone of true development, requiring inclusive leadership, ongoing collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to educational equity.

Education is not merely a service—it is a long-term investment in people and society. Together, we are reshaping the future of education in Iraq through genuine local leadership that builds opportunities and opens doors for every child and learner.
