Proposal Writing Training

Maastricht Graduate School of Governance/UNU‐Merit was contracted by Mercy Hands for Humanitarian Aid to conduct a training on ‘Proposal writing’. The target of the training was Mercy Hands staff as well as staff from other NGOs in Iraq. The two-day training workshop took place in Erbil, Iraq, and consisted of interactive lectures and group exercises.


A total of 32 participants took part in the training, 15 participants from Mercy hands and 17 participants from other organizations. The training was conducted by Dr. Lisa Andersson from Maastricht Graduate school of Governance/UNU-MERIT. The training language was English.

The workshop aimed at strengthening the participants’ capacity in drafting proposals. More precisely, the workshop included the following learning outcomes:

• Conduct relevant background research to prepare for a proposal;

• Analyse strengths and weakness of its organisation in relation to funding opportunities;

• Organize and prepare all components of a funding proposal.



The two‐day workshop included four lectures and was accompanied by group exercises. The first day of the training focused on project design and preparations of a proposal through activity plans and SWOT analysis. The second day focused on proposal structure and advice on do’s and don’ts in the drafting process.
